Nothing new. </div><div>But, Today was a fantastic day for raptors. Afternoon around 3pm, a huge flock of raptors mainly more than 250 Black Kite (<i>Milvus migrans</i>), 4 Marsh Harrier (<i>Circus aeruginesus</i>), 2 Montagu‘s Harrier (<i>Circus pygargus</i>) and a Long-legged Buzzard (<i>Buteo Rufinus</i>) were soaring over the station . Bird activities around the station resumed. The number of birds caught is all right. Long-eared Owl (<i>Asio otus</i>) was today's favorite bird. So far, our volunteers, ''Kasım Kırlangıç'' from Middle East Technical University, ''Merve Tepe'' from Pamukkale University and our dear charitable and venerable brother ''Levent Aydın'' have been volunteering in the station.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">From now on, our bird ringing expert ''Sedat İnak'' and our field assistant ''Yakup Şaşmaz'' are going to host 7 more volunteers, ''Gamze Acet'', ''Jale Tanış'', ''Nuh Kubilay'', ''Osman Baydili'', ''Ömer Karaman'' from Fırat University; and ''Gül Yücel'' and ''Meltem Tuna'' from Middle East Technical University. They had been volunteering in our another project (Large Carnivors Project) in Kars, for the last 10 days. Thanks to their kind effort.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">So, this was the first day and the very exciting day for them. From now on they will also become more closer to the magnificent birds which they had been dreaming about. Gratifying thing was that the ''Cetti's warbler'' was a control bird ringed in our station in spring 2009!<br /><br />Good news!<br /><br />On the other hand today was an important day for the Turkey's mammals literature.<br />Small Five-toed Jerboa (<span style="font-style: italic;">Allactaga elater</span>) was photographed for the first time in Turkey!<br /><br />It is a species of rodent in the <span style="font-style: italic;">Dipodidae</span> family found in Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, China, Georgia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Russia, Turkey, and Turkmenistan.<br />The only population in Turkey is known to be living in Iğdır where our station is located.<br />After a two thrilling night fields, 3 different individuals were photographed close to our station. We have so far recorded 313 bird species in the Kars region, over two-thirds of the country’s species, including most of eastern Turkey specialties. 170 bird species have been ringed and both numbers are still rising. As a result of our multi-year efforts to protect and monitor the region’s bird diversity while benefiting local people from ecotourism, KuzeyDoga was honored to receive from HRH Princess Anne the 2008 Whitley Gold Award, the most presitigous grassroots conservation award of the United Kingdom (http://www.whitleyaward.org/display.php?id=133).<br /><br />Our conservation and ecotourism efforts have culminated in the designation of Lake Kuyucuk as Turkey’s 13. and eastern Turkey’s first RAMSAR wetland, and Kuyucuk’s election as Turkey’s 2009 European Destination of Excellence by the European Commission.<br /><br />Aras Station (950 m a.s.l., 40º 07' N, 043º 35' E) is in a wetland by the Aras river and is surrounded by reeds and willows. Kuyucuk Lake (1627 m a.s.l., 40º 45' N, 043º 27' E) is a bird-rich steppe lake surrounded by wheat fields and alpine meadows. Over 22,500 birds of 170 species have been ringed, including many Turkey specialties and rarities such as Spotted Crake, Great Snipe, Long-legged Buzzard, Ruddy Shelduck, Levant Sparrowhawk, Pallid Harrier, Little Crake, Syrian Woodpecker, Citrine Wagtail, Corncrake, River Warbler, Grasshopper Warbler, Blyth’s Reed Warbler, Caucasian Chiffchaff, Green Warbler, Paddyfield Warbler, Short-toed Lark, Siberian Stonechat, Finsch’s Wheatear, Moustached Warbler, Upcher’s Warbler, Icterine Warbler, Menetrie’s Warbler, Barred Warbler, Red-throated Flycatcher, Semi-collared Flycatcher, Rose-colored Starling, Common Rosefinch and Black-headed Bunting.<br /><br />In spring 2010, ringing will begin at Aras station on March 15, 2010 and will end on May 31, 2009. The start date of Kuyucuk station depends on the weather but will be around April 1. We are looking for volunteers who will help ring birds at our stations between these dates. The facilities are basic but comfortable, with amenities such as hot showers and Western-style flush toilets. Minimum participation must be at least 15 days, ideally one month or more.<br /><br />Accommodation at the Aras station will be provided in the former teacher's house with a capacity of 5 beds. Western-style flush toilet, hot shower, kitchen, and stove are available in the house. Volunteers are responsible for preparing the breakfast whereas delicious lunch and dinner are cooked locally.<br /><br />At Kuyucuk, accommodation will be provided in the former teacher's house with 6 beds in the village and in a cabin by the lake with a capacity of 4 beds. Western-style flush toilet, hot shower and kitchen are available in the house. Volunteers are responsible for preparing the meals with supplies provided by KuzeyDoga. Since Lake Kuyucuk is mile-high in elevation, we recommend our volunteers to bring their own sleeping bags and cold weather clothes, particularly in April. During the day, it will be 15-20 C, warming up as spring progresses.<br /><br />Each station will be led by a licensed master ringer(s) and volunteers will be responsible for checking the nets hourly, collecting birds from nets, bringing to the ringing center, recording the data on data sheets, making orientation experiments, releasing the ringed birds and preparing the meals. We usually have English speaking ringers at the stations and our English-speaking staff can be reached at all times. Total number of the birds ringed in both stations through the fieldworks conducted by KuzeyDoğa Society, Kars Directorate of Environment and Forestry, Iğdır Directorate Environment and Forestry and Kafkas University, reached collectively to 5439.<br /><br />Aras Bird Research and Education Center is located by the Lake of Aras in the village of Yukarı Çıyrıklı, district of Tuzluca, province of Iğdır. The bird-ringing activities at Aras Bird Research and Education Center were initiated in fall 2006, which were organized this year starting on 10 August 2009 and ending on 31 October 2009. On 83 days of bird-ringing studies, 2868 individuals from 74 different species of birds were ringed. Throughout the ringing period, 14 students from Hacettepe, METU, Bosphorus, Istanbul, Yüzüncü Yıl, Ankara and Kafkas Universities volunteered and 9 expert ringers from Czech Republic, England, the Netherlands, Belgium and Scotland boosted the studies. Somehow, everything came together in one sleepless week. We simultaneously hosted two documentary crews, organized and celebrated the II. Kars-Igdir Nature Festival that spanned three provinces, hosted Alim “Flying Man” Yildirim who took aerial photos of our focal wetlands with nine paramotor flights, collected vegetation samples for our wetland restoration experiment with Dr. Sean Anderson, and ran two bird banding stations, while coordinating the coming and going of dozens of volunteers and festival guests. All with a staff of five!<br /><br />Fortunately everything went well. Nobody got left at the base of Mt. Ararat during our field trip and The Flying Man completed all his flights flawlessly, while obtaining priceless photos and HD footage of the wetlands we are trying to protect. We thank him, our volunteers, the dedicated documentary crews, and our guests. Special thanks go to our festival supporters: Eren Dairy of Fuat Uluman for bringing the Flying Man to Kars, United Nations Eastern Turkey Tourism Project for the festival t-shirts and hats, Igdir and Kars governors, Kafkas University, Kars Municipality, Arpacay and Akyaka district governors, Igdir and Kars Departments of Environment and Forestry, Kuyucuk and Yukari Ciyrikli villages. As soon as Eylül and Bengisu arrived, they cleaned the house we stay in the village.
